Saved by Virtue
A Buddhist monk was sent by the Buddha to spread his teachings in the United States. He traveled the country teaching the word of the Buddha and converting many of those who were lost. After working his way east from Seattle, Washington and finishing his duty in Tallahassee, Florida, he traveled to New York to finish his journey. He was a model monk, virtuous and moral; all of the things that his fellow Chinese people back home held in high esteem. It was for this reason that this monk was chosen by the Buddha for the extremely prodigious task of traveling and teaching how to live a virtuous life. As he walked down a sun drenched street, taking in the bustling people in neat suits carrying briefcases, going about their daily business, a man come out of the dark alley that was wedged in between two black graffiti-decorated buildings that were considerably shorter than the skyscrapers that cast their giant shadows on them from across the street. He flew into the monk and knocked him to the grimy sidewalk. He was dressed in black from head to toe, wearing a trench coat and a ski mask. The unknown man placed one knee on the monk’s chest and pulled out a gun, which he pointed to his prisoner’s temple. In the distance, cars streaked by in a blur, oblivious to the injustice underway right beneath their noses.
“Give me all yo’ money! I said ‘Give me yo’ money!’ the robber boomed, enunciating every bit of his last words. The monk just stared at him with a blank expression. The robber impatiently cocked his gun and gave a smirk, clearly expecting full compliance from the monk. The monk slowly reached and pulled out the ten yuans he had collected for his monastery.
“It isn’t much,” the monk explained humbly, “but you may have it.” The robber snatched them greedily from the monk’s hands.
“I’ll make you a deal. What makes you tick?” the robber demanded, examining the plainly-dressed monk from head to toe with a quizzical look, as he tried to assess the answer to his question through observations.
“Serving the Buddha and teaching others his way,” the monk answered faithfully. The robber stared at the flashy lights of capitalism beaming from Times Square and looked thoughtful for a moment before responding.
“Hmm. These look valuable. Renounce Buddha and I will give you five of these things back.”
“I cannot do that. I believe in him and cannot lie. The yuans are not worth that.”
The robber heard sirens bearing down on the dark alley and turned to run away from his virtuous victim, when he ran smack into a thin hand held out by a serene and peaceful looking figure, who towered over him.
“Who are you?” the robber trembled.
“I am the Buddha. And you shall be punished for eternity for your crimes and immoral lifestyle,” the Buddha replied calmly. He turned to the monk. “You, my faithful monk, shall be rewarded for your loyalty and virtue. You shall be made a saint,” he declared, his voice now dripping with warmth and love. The saint and the robber watched him vanish, seeing only the bright lights of the city once more.
The Buddha was true to his word, as was expected of him. After his death, the robber was sent to the sixteenth layer of hell, the Mountain of Flames, where he spent eternity surrounded in the inferno. The virtuous monk was made into a saint and was respected from then on, wherever he went. Godsmack 4 Life-FIRST POST
